Optischer Farbmischer [toy] = Mélange-couleurs par illusion d'optique = Optical colour-mixer / design Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack. [ca. 1980]

Optischer Farbmischer was designed to demonstrate the effects of colour mixing by the placement of different colour-printed rings on a gyrating top. Text on the verso of each numbered ring explains its optical effects, with some making reference to authors of colour theories: Rembrandt, Goethe, Schopenhauer, and Bezold. The literature accompanying the toy describes it as "very typical of the didactic intentions of the Bauhaus", emphasizing the importance of the new approach of the Bauhaus to art education, as well as its influence on the shaping of architecture, design and painting.
